This review is crazy, scary, spooky, and hilarious (GNX Album Review)
Hey guys! In honor of tonight being the Super Bowl, I decided to review the Kendrick Lamar's latest album GNX! I've not really ever been the biggest hip-hop or rap fan, but I've found myself enjoying that genre more recently. I really enjoyed luther, squabble up, and tv off, so I figured I should listen to the whole album, and I was not disappointed. Enough talking, let's get into some more talking, starting with...
#1: wacced out murals (5/5)
This is a great way to open an album. The production is such a vibe, but also somewhat eerie at the same time. Kendrick sounds great, especially on this beat. His flow is amazing here, and this song is probably the most rap-centered song on this album. It kind of gives me HUMBLE. vibes, but I haven't really taken a deep dive into his discography to know if it sounds like anything else.
I have always really enjoyed this one. The production on this one is great and really fun, and the “When I Hear Music” sample is a really great addition to this song. Kendrick sounds great here, and his flow is really good too. I really like the bridge on this one too.
#3: luther (with SZA) (5/5)
Every time I turn this on, the first few notes of this song makes me think Despacito is going to play. Anyways, back to the song. I really like the production on this one, even though I thought it was really boring when I first heard it. Kendrick and SZA both sound really great here, and they sound even better together. The sample is executed well, and overall this a great song.
#4: man at the garden (5/5)
This is definitely a switch up from what we’ve heard so far, but a welcome change. This is a really self-reflecting song, and I like it. The production is slow, but I still enjoy it. Kendrick sounds kind of like Snoop Dogg on this one, and I mean that as a compliment. I also really like how the whole song culminates at the end.
#5: hey now (feat. Dody6) (5/5)
I think this is a song reflecting on the Drake beef, and I really enjoy it. The production is great, and Kendrick sounds great here.I really like the bridge, and Dody6’s verse is great. I think this one will be played tonight at the big game, and I’m excited for that.
#6: reincarnated (5/5)
The production on this song immediately caught my attention, its just that good. Kendrick sounds really great, and like I said, I absolutely love the production here. The production also builds throughout the song, and I really love evolution in production. Pretty amazing song.
#7: tv off (feat. Lefty Gunplay) (5/5)
MUSTAAAAAAARRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDD!! This is probably my favorite song off this album. The production is amazing, and Kendrick sounds great. He has a great flow on this one especially. The chorus is very catchy, and I really like the intro. The beat switch is amazing, and it has quite possibly one of the greatest transitions in any song. I also like Lefty Gunplay's part on here. This song feels like it was meant to be played at the Super Bowl, so I can't wait to hear it live tonight.
#8: dodger blue (feat. Wallie the Sensei, Siete7x, Roddy Ricch) (5/5)
This is one of the slower songs, but I don't hate it. The production is really great, and everybody sounds good here, even though I can't really tell the difference between them. I can tell that Kendrick sounds great though. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. Great song though.
#9: peekaboo (feat. AzChike) (5/5)
This song is just so fun. I love the concept of this song, and "bing-bop-boom-boom-boom-bop-bam" is in the top 3 lines of this album just behind "MUSTAAAARRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDD" in my opinion. AzChike has a really great voice on here, and his flow is great. I also love Kendrick on this one, and the production here is top tier. The ending is great too.
#10: heart pt. 6 (5/5)
Wow, the production on this album really slaps. The production here is amazing, and Kendrick once again sounds good. I really like his background singers, and his flow is just as great as always. This album is actually amazing so far!
#11: gnx (feat. Hitta J3, YoungThreat, Peysoh) (2/5)
So we've reached the first subpar song on this album. I have no idea who any of these features are, and I really couldn't care to learn about them. None of them sound good, and the production just feels too messy for my liking. The whole song in general feels really messy, and I can't really get into it.
#12: gloria (with SZA) (4/5)
So we've reached the last song on this album, and it features SZA again. SZA sounds great here, and Kendrick sounds like he's mumbling a bit too much, but I think I can get past it. The production here is amazing once again, and overall it's a very solid way to end the album.
Overall Score: 57/60 (95%) - Great
Favorite Songs: squabble up, tv off, reincarnated
Least Favorite Songs: gnx, gloria
This was a surprisingly amazing album! I wasn't expecting me to like it as much as I did, especially because it's more outside of my wheelhouse, but I was pleasantly surprised. This now ties TTPD and THE ANTHOLOGY as the highest scoring albums, which I don't really think is accurate anymore (ICFH has grown on me enough to where its not a 1/5). Well, I'll see you later when I post his setlist tonight!
